Commenting on the Google Android antitrust case, on which Commissioner Vestager today presented a Statement of Objections, MEP Julia Reda states:
I welcome antitrust actions aimed at dismantling user lock-in and limiting choice concerning the devices that influence our lives to an ever larger degree.
Consumers must have full freedom to choose between hardware, firmware, operating systems, services, app stores, browsers and apps. Users can only retain their digital self-determination if neither operating system providers nor any other company along the value chain undermine their ability to combine these components in any way they desire.
Being based on open-source software, the Android platform has the potential to be the model of a free and diverse ecosystem. I call on Google to embrace these principles fully and to resolve the Commission’s concerns swiftly.
The Commission I ask to ensure that the priority remains the empowerment of users, and not of carriers.
